Over time your helmet is going to take some minor bumps and bruises, perhaps a couple of small drops, and maybe even a nasty accident. And you're wondering if motorcycle helmet repair is an option. Generally the answer is no. Of course you can touch up nicks on the paint, or replace a strap. You might even be able to replace a liner but overall helmet repairs are limited unless done by the manufacturer. As well the padding compresses over time and thus offers less protection than it originally did. Another problem is the chins straps which often become frayed and develop weak points. A chipped outer shell also weakens over time. Each year helmets see more and more improvements. This in itself is a great reason in itself for buying new helmets. The newer the helmet the higher the protection factor for you. Helmets are stamped with the date they were produced. You can find this on the helmet's chin strap. It makes it easy to tell how old a helmet is. If there is no date it simply means it pre-dates 1974. To help extend the life of your helmet always follow the directions provided by the manufacturer. You should use only mild soap to clean your helmet and never use petroleum based products. This is really important with polycarbonate helmets which will cause the helmet to decompose. Do not hang your helmet on the motorcycle mirror, sissy bar, or turn signals. The liner can be damaged really easily and over time it can lose some of the protective qualities. Never paint or decorate your helmet with decals or other markings until you check with the manufacturer. And then be sure to follow carefully. When it comes time to replace that helmet why not do your shopping online where you can save plenty of bucks by buying from one of the many reputable sites. Set your budget and stick to it. Since your helmet is your most important safety equipment and can be the difference between a long interesting life and a brain that's scrambled should an accident occur, spend as much as you possibly can. Once you know your budget it's time to decide what type of helmet you want - full face or open face. You can also decide what manufacturer you prefer. Perhaps you don't have a preference, that's just fine. Just be sure it is DOT and or SNELL certified. Your motorcycle helmet repairs may be possible by a dealer but it is important that you don't attempt repairs on your own. Instead you should replace any helmet that is damaged.
