Tips For Purchasing Motorcycle Crash Helmets

Great motorcycle! Now all you need to do is keep yourself and part of that is keeping your noggin healthy with a helmet. But you can't do that just based on size and material. There's much more to it! So here are some great tips for purchasing motorcycle crash helmets.

Of course you want your helmet to both look great and keep you safe. And you can do that providing you have a good fit. In fact the fit needs to be perfect to ensure that you get the full safety value from your helmet. Some helmets are safer than others and it is important that you know who has what to offer.

Manufacturers like Shoei, Arai, Icon, Erex, Suomy, Bell, Nolan, and HJC have been producing quality helmets that are Snell and DOT approved for years. There are many other manufacturers but these are some of the best and most recognized throughout the industry.

There are two things that are critical to a safe helmet. The first is to ensure your head is correctly protected and that the helmet will stand up to an accident. The second is to ensure that your visibility all the way around is good. You need to be able to see all around you to stay safe.

Too often you look at just the aesthetics of the helmet rather than the safety elements which are more important. Sure looking good is important but not nearly as important as your safety.

So when choosing your helmet you should consider all of the following.

1. DOT Approved
The helmet you are looking to buy should be DOT or Snell approved. This tells you it has been tested and passed to ensure you are in good hands.

2. Fit
You need to ensure that the overall fit of the helmet is right. We all have heads that are different shapes and you should match your helmet to your head shape. If you have an egg shaped head then try on oblong helmets. If you have a round head then try on earth helmets.

3. Visibility
You need to be able to see properly and you need good peripheral vision so you have to try a helmet to know if it is right for you.

4. Weight
Helmets come in all kinds of weights depending on style and material and that's important because if the helmet you choose is too heavy then your neck will become sore.

5. Go Bright
Go bright or stay home. Not only do bright colors look great and alive on a helmet they also provide an additional safety element because they get noticed. Bright colors are more easily seen by other drivers, especially at night when headlights reflect.

6. Liners
The outer shell protects your head from abrasions but the inner liner protects your brain from becoming scrambled. The liner must fit right and you'll know if it's a good fit if you have no pressure points. If you feel pressure points don't buy the helmet.

Buying helmets online can be a bit more of a challenge because you can't try before you buy. But you can shop around locally try on different helmets to learn the best fits and then shop online for the best pricing. That way you get the best fit and the best price. Never buy a helmet just because you like it. Buy it because it fits right and looks great!
